For students high school can be hell, but it can be worse for the teachers. Chalk follows the frenetic and awkwardly painful journey of three novice teachers as they navigate one memorable public school year. As a former teachers, Akel and Mass are able to offer a unique, firsthand view of life as an educator, and along with the cast, they dive headfirst into the absurd and often volatile world of public education. In a country where 50% of teachers quit within the first three years, Chalk delivers an enormous dose of heart, hilarity, and hope for America’s most important institution.  This film pulled the rare double win of both the Jury and Audience award at the 2006 Austin Film Festival.

Shot at Travis High School in Austin.

"A bracing antidote to Hollywood’s inspirational coach-athlete, teacher-student sob fests, this view of American high school life from a teacher’s perspective feels painfully accurate. But Chalk isn’t sour, even without redemption and personal transcendence. By the end of the school year progress has been made in generational communication. Still, you’re not sure if anyone has really learned very much." – Stephen Holden, New York Times

"Chalk lets us in on how hard it must be to live an adult life in an adolescent universe, where everything you do, say and wear is just too funny for words." - Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times
