NEW IN 2009!
Never mind the man behind the curtain!
Have you been dying to know what the Austin Film Festival is saying about your screenplay that didn’t make it to the championship round last year (or the year before that)? For the first time since its inception 16 years ago, Austin Film Festival is providing writers who submit screenplays advancing to the Second Round of reading in 2009 with Reader's Notes on their work. You’ll receive critiques and suggestions from readers which can help you look at your script through the eyes of production company readers.
When you read your notes, you can take a peek behind the curtain into what people are saying about your script - the same kinds of notes a reader at a production company might make!
Please keep in mind that these notes are not the same as coverage. Coverage is an extensive 5-7 page summary and breakdown of the script provided from a reader at a production company to a Producer (because the Producers can't be bothered to read the script themselves). The feedback our competition will be providing to all Second Rounders in the competition is the boiled down version of that - the notes the reader might make while reading the script before he or she sits down to write the coverage. In this you can still see the same points, but the format is a bit more skeletal and informal.
The feedback given is meant to be a helpful tool for the writing process. Hearing what readers and writers with experience in your field think should help you grow as a screenwriter and artist, and can help you take your screenplay to the next level... the money-making level. This feedback will also give writers a better idea of what the Austin Film Festival is looking for in a winning script. With feedback, you can make improvements to your screenplays that will increase your success in future competitions.
There is nothing harder than looking at your own work objectively. That is why feedback from a third party is the most invaluable tool you can have when wading into that 3rd, 4th or 15th rewrite.
