Home Movie Day
Coming in October: HOME MOVIE DAY!
In October, AFF will join with other local organizations in supporting Austin's third annual Home Movie Day event. Mark your calendars now and start going through those closets, attics, and basements to find your old regular 8, Super8, and 16mm home movies to bring to this event!
Home Movie Day, observed yearly in cities around the world since 2003, is a grass-roots, BYOF (bring your own film!) screening event, where community members get to meet with motion picture preservationists, archivists, and historians to learn more about preserving family films as part of our cultural heritage.
As at previous events, participants are encouraged to bring in their own home movies in the original film formats for inspection, basic preservation assessment and repairs, and exhibition. Experts will be on hand to discuss the challenges and benefits of preserving film originals, give tips on storage, copying, and digitization of films, and share examples of historic home movies from area collections. This is a great chance to get a free consultation on how to preserve that boxful of movies your grandfather made, or watch that mystery reel you found in your aunt's basement! Films brought by participants will be screened on a first-come, first-served basis, so plan to arrive early if you're bringing films yourself. Don't have films of your own? Just come and watch...these home movies WON'T be boring!
The 2008 Austin Home Movie Day event will be better than ever, with raffle prizes sponsored by local merchants (including AFF film passes good for the entire week following the event!) and a special screening of a recently restored film from the Austin History Center collection.
