Sean Covel
Sean C. Covel (30) grew up in the small ranching town of Edgemont, South Dakota (population: 600) and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in broadcast management and theater. After a brief stint in San Francisco, Covel pursued filmmaking by enrolling in the prestigious Peter Stark Producing Program at the USC school of Cinema/Television; graduating with a Masters in Motion Picture Producing in 2002.
In 2003 Covel teamed with fellow Peter Stark Alum, Chris “Doc” Wyatt, to produce NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, directed by Jared Hess. Made for only $400,000, the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and quickly sold to Fox Searchlight and MTV Films. The picture went on to make $44 million domestically and over $100 million on DVD, making it one of the most profitable independent films in history. NAPOLEON DYNAMITE has won several awards ranging from Best Feature at the Aspen Comedy Arts Festival to MTV Movie Awards, Teen Choice Awards and Blockbuster Movie Awards.
Covel and Wyatt were together nominated for the IFP's prestigious "Independent Spirit Producing Award" recognizing creative innovations in filmmaking with limited capital. They proceeded to lose that award on national television.
The duo have since produced three films; THINK TANK (CFE, releasing fall '06), BENEATH (PARAMOUNT CLASSICS/MTV FILMS, releasing winter '06) and 12 DOGS (UNIVERSAL, releasing winter '06). Their next feature, DODGE, shoots on location in and around Austin, TX, in February of 2006.
Recently, Covel could be seen as a contestant on THE PRICE IS RIGHT where he had a chance to win a 2006 Ford Mustang. Yet again, Covel managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on national television. Covel is frequently on location with various film productions, but he hangs his nunchucks in Los Angeles.
